Helping the poor through education that hones skills, forms values

$

dualtechEducating the poor can certainly alleviate poverty in the country, especially if it equips them with the know-how and skills needed by companies.

Public high school graduates who cannot go to college because they lack the resources might want to study at Dualtech Training Center. Dualtech offers a six-month course in electromechanics technology to high school graduates and out-of-school youth. After which, they are given an 18-month on-the-job training in companies, during which they already receive an allowance. After the OJT, they are hired.

The parents are made to shoulder only the board and lodging of their children for the first six months so that they will encourage their children to persevere and finish their training. Since the parents are mostly farmers with limited means, they approach kind townsfolk to help sponsor the scholars, like what happened in my hometown.

Kinfolk and friends chipped in with whatever provision they could give to the scholars. Mayor Jose Bunoan Jr. generously provided transportation for them to Canlubang, Calamba City, where Dualtech Center is located and, that’s how the first 10 Dualtech scholars from Tagudin, Ilocos Sur, finished the course. Now, they are on their OJT!

It was an opportunity for selfless townsfolk, motivated only by the goodness of their hearts, to join a noble cause and help the young find a better future. If this is replicated in many parts of the country, we would be able to help poor families in a concrete way.

We attended the graduation ceremony of 104 students of Dualtech Center last May 30. The joyous event was also attended by parents beaming with happiness at seeing their sons graduate, capping their successful experience of “hope, opportunity and transformation.”

What is distinctive in Dualtech is that the students are taught not only technical skills; more importantly, they are also taught values that imbue them with the virtue and attitude for wholesome work. Thus, employers are happy to hire them immediately after their graduation.

The commencement speaker, Jose Miguel A. Orleans, general manager of NXP Semiconductors Cabuyao Inc., one of the company partners, encouraged the new graduates to continue their studies while working—like getting an engineering degree, master’s or doctorate; and to always have a sense of gratitude, especially toward their parents who sacrificed a lot for them.

Established in 1982 in partnership with more than 100 manufacturing and service companies, Dualtech is located in Carmelray Industrial Park I, Canlubang, Calamba City (Tel. No. 8886420, e-mail info@dualtech.org.ph).

“They did not go to college, but they went through a unique dual training system that transformed young high school graduates from poor families into skilled, high-income earning and morally upright professionals who serve the needs of the industry and their communities.” (www.dualtech.org.ph)

DeBorja-FamilyRamiro De Borja works at Zenith Corporation, a partner company of Dualtech which owns a commissary plant of the Jolibee Group based in Laguna. He is an alumnus who graduated from Dualtech in 1991 and belongs to section/class A10. Ramir has two sons who also graduated from Dualtech: Russel 25 years old, of C-222 graduated in 2009 and Ramir, Jr. , 22 years old of Section C287 graduated in 2012. Both are now working as technicians: Russel with Pepsi Cola Phils. in Muntinlupa City at the Engineering Department and Ramir, Jr. at the Red Ribbon Commissary in Pasig City at its Production Department.

Ramir, Sr. comes from Pililla, Rizal. During his Dualtech days he was trained at RFM Corporation - Gerber Division (Engineering Department) where he learned much in both mechanical and electrical works. He was then hired at RFM - Indofood Corp. where he worked for 13 years before moving to his current company where the family decided to be located near at.  "While going through the training and applied exposure in the partner factory of Dualtech where I was assigned, I had to deal with more senior employees and overcome many difficult situations. I learned to show RESPECT to my co-workers, practice HUMILITY and sustain my interior DETERMINATION. Through the guidance of mentors, I was able to affirm very important VALUES in my daily life, most especially the following: FORTITUDE which refers to mental strength and courage that allows one to face danger or pain resolutely; PERSEVERANCE, continuing with effort to do or achieve goals despite difficulties or failure; JUSTICE, giving whatever is due or fair; TEMPERANCE, moderating one's action, thought or feelings; PRUDENCE, delivering things before deciding. Remembering these VIRTUES allowed me to keep on working to develop good personal CHARACTER and positive work ATTITUDE, ultimately striving towards greater LOVE of God". These principles are what Ramir regards as qualities that go with TATAK DUALTECH that he wished his sons would also learn to imbibe.

Arnold-Palacol-and sonsYet Ramir is not the first one to have sent his sons to study at Dualtech. The honor goes to one of the first five graduates of Dualtech in 1987, section A1, chairman of his class and first president of the first alumni general assembly namely Arnold Palacol. His sons Richard and Arnold, Jr. also took up the Dualtech course at the Binondo campus, completing their training in 2007 and 2008 respectively.

Arnold, Sr. was joined by his sons in UAE where he commissions and maintains industrial equipment. He himself tutors them automation skills in which he has become an expert on. Arnold hails from Pandacan, Manila where neighbors who witnessed his success got their sons to follow his footsteps at Dualtech as well. Many are now themselves successful professionals working in various industries here and abroad.

Arnold decided to send his sons to his alma mater because he wanted them not only to be grounded in solid technical foundation but more importantly to learn how to be good individual persons. Another son JONARD also wants to attend training in Dualtech. "I am very proud of the work my sons are doing and also very proud that they attended training at DUALTECH."

Similarly, another alumnus, esparaz-familyAdolf Esparas, Jr., who belongs to section A7 and graduated in 1990, when asked why his son Adolf III also enrolled at Dualtech, affirmed the testimonies of Arnold and Ramir: "I have engineers in my team who graduated from various reputable universities. When I learned that my son thought of becoming an engineer himself, we had a serious talk where I convinced him about the merits of solid professional training and grounding in technical experience where one attains high level of maturity. I thought those engineers did not have such thorough preparation in work. Dualtech became the logical option for my son. Fortunately, my son liked the idea even if he knew that I could afford to send him to a university of his choice.

Adolf Jr. works for a reputable food manufacturing company. His son, Adolf III (of section C311 and graduated in 2013), while at the Dualtech program was trained as OJT at Daiwa Seiko Phils. then got employed at URC for a 1 year and transferred to Benison Corporation located in GMA Cavite, and has been working there as technician. He will pursue his Mechanical Engineering degree while continuing to work.

The sons, each of whom has his own individual story to tell had one thing in common: They look up to their hardworking father and wanted to imitate “Dad”.
Like father, like sons indeed.

(There are three more fathers, Dualtech alumni, whose sons are still in the program)

Each Family is Unique

$

If man is made to the image and likeness of God, the most natural grouping of men must somewhat follow the grouping of God in His inner being. In our human terms, we call this grouping as communion. Naturally we, as human persons, have this communion, which is first established in the union of man and woman in marriage. Following the natural course of events – as willed by our Creator--, this union bears offspring and the grouping is called family. It is the most basic grouping found in the human society. It is the most natural thing. People are not taught to form families. They just follow nature. People fall in love and come together. Then, children come out naturally. The bond among themselves is so strong that they live a community of life.

Family is the basic cell of the society. Many families form a society. In the society, rules are made to protect the individuals, the families, and the society itself. Other artificial groupings can enter the society but the most natural and stable grouping is the family. The other groups can develop into bigger and more complex groups but not lasting. Forming a family is in the nature of the human persons. When a man marries a woman, they have started a family, with children coming forth.

In the religious environment, the family is the domestic church. God is first appreciated in the family. The parents catechize their children in the most natural way. They make the sign of the cross, point to Jesus and Mary, teach basic prayers, and later, bring the children to the church. The pious practices of the adults are embedded in the hearts and mind of the young members of the family.

Each family has a distinct history. Some are poor; others, rich. Families can be urbanized or rural. Education can be a priority for some; while others would give priority to earning a living. Many families have normal lives. Some could experience tragedies. Sport could be a prime issue for a group of families. Acting or singing is a line that is followed by selected families. Whatever is the outstanding feature of any family, the members of the family share in the success or failure of the family. In other words, joys and sorrows are felt by the members of the family. This follows the adage: blood is thicker than water. But it is not blind connection following blood relations because it has to be developed in the family life. I remember a story of switching babies in the hospital. It was a story of twin sisters. One of them was taken by another family. To cut the story short, this latter girl was recognized by a sibling of her original family. Necessary contact was made and then, DNA analysis followed. Once it was proven to be so, it was presented to the said girl. But then, she chose her foster parents. No emotional connection was established with her biological parents.

Natural family ties are maintained after the earthly existence. Just like there is continuity of a human person, his affinities continue in the afterlife, most especially in the family. I would like to recall the commentary of St. Thomas More about his future life in heaven with his two wives. Hence we cannot abandon our natural family—father, mother, siblings, children. We can extend it to our uncles, aunts, and in-laws. In other words, we hope that family reunions are extended in heaven.

At the end of the day, I would like to recall a nice idea of St. Josemaria about the family: to see cheerful and bright families, trying to imitate the home of Nazareth, where Jesus, Mary, & Joseph developed their family life.

dts-studyThe DTS program outweigh the cost of training the student/trainee.

TESDA and Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) – Human Resources Development Foundation conducted a study about the Cost and benefit Analysis of the Dual Training System in The Philippines. Dualtech and its partner companies were among the DTS stakeholders that provided empirical data.

Key Findings

  • DTS trainees provide long term benefits that includes recruitment costs (ads, personnel), productivity difference, and orientation cost.
  • Combined short and long term benefits is bigger than the overall costs by Php 3,500 per trainee.
  • For firms in the DTS program lasting for more than 12 months, the short term benefit accounts for about 51% of the average cost per trainee per month.
  • It is beneficial for firms to engage in training programs that are a bit longer than the usual three months because of relatively higher benefits
  • The non-monetary benefits include the positive image for the firm for helping young members of society, potential increase in the welfare of the trainees (higher salary and higher probability of being employed)
  • DTS program produces substantial positive spillover effects on the DTS-trained workers – the trainees become more productive.

dts-table

Short Term benefits include the productivity and seasonal benefits derived by the firms.
Long Term benefits include the savings of the company in hiring new employees.

COVERAGE
The study covers four (4) regions: NCR, CALABARZON, Central Luzon, and Northern Mindanao. There were 201 out of 706 firms and 21 out of 82 technical schools participated in the study. This also covered the 112 trainees interviewed to determine the perception of the trainees on the DTS program.

The study is also in partnership with the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) and University of the Philippines Statistical Center Research Foundation.

“Enabling adult school dropouts to continue studying through Alternative Learning Centers.”

ALS is a parallel learning system that provides a practical option to the existing formal instruction. When one does not have or cannot access formal education in schools, ALS is an alternate or substitute. ALS includes both the non-formal and informal sources of knowledge and skills.

The Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation, enabled thousands of school dropouts to restart their education through 19 Alternative Learning Centers. These centers promote the Alternative Learning System (ALS). Some students who finished High School through ALS were given further opportunities by continuing their education in Dualtech.

It was their Regional Manager, Mr. Mico Jimenez, who recommended Dualtech to be one of Cebuana Lhuillier's partner institution for scholarship. Since 2001, Cebuana has been implementing scholarship program within 11 educational institution. Children and employees of PJ Lhuillier Group of Companies enjoy the privilege to have such scholarship.

Mr. William De los Reyes, a beneficiary, has this to say: “ Many people say opportunity knocks once. But for me, there was more. I am very fortunate to be given the chance to study at Dualtech and at the same time be one of the scholars of Cebuana Lhuiller in 2011. I am grateful that they gave me this opportunity. Wherever I am now and will be in the future, Cebuana Lhuillier and the people behind it will always be part of my journey.”

Aside from the recommendation of Mr. Jimenez, Cebuana saw the potential of Dualtech scholars' having high employability upon graduation. The transformation of each student is also an important factor Cebuana considered in trusting Dualtech as their partner. In 16 years of partnership with Dualtech, Cebuana has graduated 64 scholars.

gt-fdnGT Foundation partnered with Dualtech Center for the Scholarship in Technical Vocational Education (STEP) Program.

On September 1, 2016, 25 scholars from Leyte and Bohol who were sponsored by GT Foundation were given Certificate of Recognition after completion of 6-Month Basic Training Program in Electromechanics Technology. These scholars were placed to Dualtech partners for the next phase of training where actual work exposure and advanced skills are to be provided.

Two scholars shared their stories during the earthquake in Bohol and Yolanda-typhoon in Leyte. After the devastation, they were forced to work to help their families who have been recovering from the loss. His cousin who graduated from Dualtech told him to apply for scholarship. He was then selected to be among the first batch of GT Foundation scholars. Mr. Cotejar is undergoing in-plant training at Asia Brewery in Cabuyao City.

Ms. Marla Santiago, Program Officer of GT Foundation, witnessed the recognition day.  To inspire the scholars, she told the story of the founder, Mr. Ty, who is not a college graduate yet his hard work, patience, and perseverance brought up one of the largest banks in the Philippines - Metrobank. She also said to scholars, “Masaya ako na kayo ang napili namin as scholars. Very proud kami sa inyong lahat na papasok na sa in-plant training. Hindi na lang kayo Dualtech kundi pati na din GT Foundation scholars. Congratulations!”

During the Metrobank’s 54th Anniversary on September 05, 2016, GT Foundation invited Dualtech to attend the Anniversary Grants and Turnover Ceremony and Luncheon hosted by the Group Chairman, Dr. Goerge SK Ty in Metrobank Plaza Auditorium, Makati City. Through STEP Program, GT Foundation added sponsorship grants for 50 scholars. Mr. Arnolfo Morfe, Dualtech President said, “Once again, we would like to thank GT Foundation for sponsoring the second batch of 50 scholars from Cebu, Bohol, Palawan, Nueva Ecija, and Camarines Norte. The financial assistance has now reached other far-flung provinces to fund deserving scholars to undergo the two-year Electromechanics Technology program. This annual event paid tribute and respect to their partner foundation and communities for various initiatives that contribute for the good of the nation.

Mr. Morfe added, “Dualtech and GT Foundation share a common mission to uplift the lives of the scholars through technical training which will eventually lead to immediate jobs. By helping them, we also contribute to their families, the communities, and then make them productive citizens of our country."

GT Foundation, Inc. (GTFI) was incorporated on October 7, 2009 with the purpose of integrating the philanthropic activities of the Ty family and investing in strategic programs that respond to the basic needs of the less privileged members of the society.

sm-fdnAfter the graduation of SM Foundation's first batch from Tacloban City Leyte, another 100 Dualtech scholars were among 1,000 new beneficiaries in technical and vocational (Tech-Voc) education in 2016.

On September 04, 2016, SM Foundation invited partner technical schools on its first Tech-Voc general assembly in SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City. From its usual number of 100 scholars annualy, SM made it to 1,000 in 2016 as they believe that graduates of Tech-Voc get immediate jobs and have bigger opportunity to be uplifted from poverty. SM Group of Companies also sees great demand for skilled manpower in the country and abroad.

The first batch of Dualtech scholars who all got employed after their training attended to thank their benefactor, Mr. Harley Sy, President of SM, for his generous assistance after the devastation of Typhoon Yolanda in Leyte in 2013.

The event started with Thanksgiving Mass officiated by Don Bosco priests. Ms. Linda Atayde, Executive Director, gave a talk about SM Group of Companies and the birth of SM Foundation which directed its focus on education. Through scholarship grants, SM Foundation opens better career opportunities to deserving students.

ryce-bagroEach trainee from the partner schools gave testimony about their life and the help of scholarship grants given by SM Foundation. For Dualtech, Mr. Royce Bagro, who is now one of the Learning Facilitators of Dualtech spoke to the audience. The biggest turning point was during Typhoon Yolanda which many families suffered including them. He heard that Dualtech Center offered scholarship in Electromechanics Technology. He took the chance to apply and then was accepted. During his training at Dualtech and AG&P in Bauan Batangas, he said, “Sa training ko natutunan kung paano magtyaga sa isang bagay at magkaroon ng maraming skills. Sa AG&P, nakakuha ako ng background sa welding na pang international ang standards

sm-fdn-schlrsMr. Harley Sy personally visited Dualtech in 2014 and recommended to be a partner school of SM Foundation. He addressed all the scholars that schools are selected by their group whom they believe to have great impact to the welfare of many scholars. “You [scholars] are in good hands. You have good chance to do well”, he said. Mr. Sy commended Mr. Bagro for his confidence which was developed through skills training and values formation of Dualtech. He also shared “You have so much to do and so much to achieve. Yet, so much challenges and problems to face and it is part of life. Be positive, learn to deal with it and have the ability to find solutions. I am convinced with Tech-Voc program because I deal with a lot of people na hindi kayang makagraduate sa college but very successful. Kapag may problema, they look for solutions and when you solve problem, you will have more value

After the inspiring talk, Mr. Sy gave a 3-D movie screening treat in I-Max Theater, SM Mall of Asia.

lao-fdnI was given another chance to change my life - scholar

In 2015, Lao Foundation gave educational assistance to 20 Dualtech scholars from Camarines Norte, Abra, and Ilocos Sur. After this batch, LFI added support to 20 scholars from Romblon, Surigao Del Norte, Nueva Vizcaya, Cebu, and Zambales.

Included as beneficiaries of LFI Scholarship grants is the first batch from Surigao City whose families were affected by the recent earthquake in  March 2017. The six scholars were recruited through the help of the coordinators from Saint Paul University.

Jomar Estrella was raised in a family for which fishing is the only source of income. His older brothers gave up their studies to send Jomar to high school. After high school, he knew too well that college education was not an option. Immediately, Jomar worked as janitor in Saint Paul University. After few weeks, the school told him about the scholarship program of Dualtech Center.
Another scholar, Ronito Ligad Jr., stopped in 3rd year high school. At a young age, he worked as farmer and a helper in a construction site. He set aside secondary education to preserve income for his parents and for the tuition of his younger siblings. His cousin told him about Alternative Learning System (ALS). He enrolled without informing his parents who only knew he was only working to support the  family. He said, “Mahirap lang po kami. Noong nalaman ng magulang ko na nakapagtapos ako sa ALS, natuwa po sila sa akin.” His mother heard about Dualtech in Saint Paul University and referred his son to be among the scholars.

These two scholars have similar stories with other 40 Dualtech scholars supported by Lao Foundation, Inc. Through the scholarship grants, scholars find hope to pursue further education.

The first batch of LFI scholars will complete the training program in July 2017.  These scholars have a common goal – to help their family.

Lao Foundation, Inc. (LFI) grew out of the informal outreaches of D&L Industries’ holdings and member companies in the communities where it operate. LFI aspires to make a dent in the lives of the poor Filipinos as its way of sharing and giving back. The foundation engages in a diversity of programs and services to make a significant impact in the lives of its beneficiaries through education, values formation, and livelihood programs.

angelicum1Angelicum Foundation gave  me a chance to continue my studies which, I thought, would just be a dream.” -- Celso Aguaviva, Scholar

Engr. Andy Malihan, one of Dualtech mentors, introduced Angelicum Foundation to Dualtech. The Angelicum Foundation is the CSR arm of the Ortoll Group of Companies. Last May 2016, Mr. Jorge Ortoll, a majority stockholder of Ortoll Group of Companies visited Dualtech and was able to witness students in action and the facilities. Interviewing students, he saw their determination to continue their education. The resolve of each student mattered a lot to the Ortoll’s.

Angelicum began by sponsoring 2 scholars in Dualtech Manila in 2013. As time passed, they saw the potential of students’ being job-ready after their training at Dualtech. Thus, they increased sponsorship of scholars and, to date, there are 15.

Celso Aguaviva, who is a Dualtech student from Antequera Bohol is one of the scholars of Angelicum and now a trainee at Transcend Technologies, Inc., in Laguna Technopark. When Celso was asked how Angelicum changed his life: “Angelicum Foundation gave  me a chance to continue my studies which I thought, would just be a dream. When I graduated in High School, I thought that I could not continue my studies anymore. We didn’t have enough money to sustain the daily needs and expenses if I go to college. But when Dualtech came to our place and discussed the opportunity to enroll in a technical vocational school, I accepted the opportunity with no hesitation. When I started at Dualtech, I was worried about my daily expenses. That’s when Angelicum Foundation came and asked me if I will be interested in their scholarship program. I am very thankful  to Angelicum for this rare opportunity. I will be forever thankful to the Ortoll Group of Companies for this scholarship. I will never be here at Dualtech without their scholarship.”

angelicum2The Ortoll Group is engaged in real estate leasing business and have properties in the cities of Manila, Makati, Mandaluyong, Quezon City, and San Juan. The Group also has  agricultural lands in Batangas. To date, the Ortoll Group has 17 corporations. They have been doing business in the Philippines for almost  42 years. It was the late (mother) Dona Concepcion Ortoll who was a Philanthropist sending many kids to school.

streetflight-fdnTo See is to Believe

The referral or suggestion of one foundation to another, bears fruit that benefited students from Tacloban.

When the Consuelo Foundation learned about a visit of Dualtech to Tacloban, they invited Streetlight to come over to check what Dualtech could offer. That was the first encounter of Streetlight with Dualtech. Three staff from Streetlight attended the orientation and they were amazed with the values formation that a trainee could inherit. Streetlight was also convinced of the platform of being employed after two years of studies.

23rd of October 2015 when Dualtech visited Tacloban to recruit possible trainees who can study in Dualtech Training Center, Laguna for two years. Dualtech conducted an orientation for the out-of-school youth who stopped their education after finishing high-school and for those who can not afford to go to college but still wishes to study and interested in finishing a vocational course.

Streetlight was able to visit Dualtech on November 16, 2016, they have seen much more than they’ve heard during the orientation. Witnessing how the trainees of Dualtech show respect to people and how politely they interact with new people. It shows that the scholars are not only equipped with technical skills but with values.

We expect nothing in return from our scholars as long as they will continue to mold themselves to become better persons.” a message from Streetlight. It would be true to say that the achievements of the scholars are also the achievements of Streetlight.

Mark Anthony Royo was a scholar of Streetlight even before studying in Dualtech. Mark was given support to go to college but due to lack of focus, he himself volunteered to stop because he felt that he no longer deserve the scholarship. He worked for several months farming together with his father. He had this realization that it was a lot easier to hold a ball pen for writing compared to a machete for cutting off grasses.

A friend of his mentioned that there is a school named Dualtech that is looking for possible trainees willing to study in Laguna. After hearing this news, he told his parents. He knew that it will be hard for them to support his studies financially.

It was about time to go back to Streetlight and apologize for wasting the previous opportunities. Seeing the willingness and eagerness to study in Dualtech he was given the second chance. Mark was granted the scholarship. He is now currently on his  8th month in Fuji-Electric finishing 18 months of on the job training.

--SAMUEL V. OLITOQUIT, Class Valedictorian & Learning Excellence Awardee | Angelicum Scholar from Camarines Sur, Trained and Employed at Cirtek Electronics Corporation

arturo-yanGod owns the earth but its is rented to the daring.  There  are lot of opportunities  for  skilled  personnel like  Dualtech workers  and for sure  companies  will knock on your doors.  You will be given opportunities to grow  and you should accept every opportunity. -- Mr. Arturo C. Yan, President | Phil-Nippon Kyoei Corporation

To set the tone,  I want to underscore  four obvious what you should  feel fulfilled and happy this morning:

  • You graduated  in  a  dual system where you learn theoretical  and practical subjects in school and practical  techniques  at work place.  Like most  boys in  German and Switzerland   , your path of   learning is preferred by  entrepreneurs  who  value  implementation.
  • You  were educated by  qualified  faculty  who  cared  and nurtured  your skills and character  .  ( Ang pagkatao  niyo ay mas malalalim)
  • Your loving  parents  took time  off   in order  to witness this significant event.   Your must realize that  they are a big part of the reason that you are here.
  • Lastly, you are  graduating  at a time where there are  huge opportunities  for  vocational graduates.

THE REAL WORLD
The meat of my talk will be the last items.   Opportunities are everywhere ((Maraming trabaho at negosyo).  The private sector is expanding.    In  the part of government,   Php  326  billion  worth of      infrastructure projects  are on main  stream .  Local  business enterprises    needs to be competitive globally.     Business owners know this  can only  be achieved if operation expenses are low and  more  jobs are  performed  a  period time.  This is where dual tech graduates  are invaluable.      Industrial equipment needs to be reliable and efficient.  Your skill will be vital to achieve this.   You, my  dual tech graduate  will be vital .  I also see  Dual Tech  “ producing graduates   who will  tackle poverty  through  engineering services  and  innovation”

As  an example,  business owner requires information   to  make  decision  on whether to  replace or buy a new equipment. You will be required    to measure ,  analyze   and to  repair important  equipment  and plant system .  (Sukatin, pagaralan at ayusin)  like power plants,  compressors,  pumps and  heat exchanger needs to be maintained well.    Your familiarity to work with your hands,  which was learned  in school and improved in the work place,   will make your skill unique .

THE IMPORTANCE TO  BE CREATIVE AND TO  WORK WITH YOUR HANDS.
The   atmosphere   this  Satruday morning brings  me back   to the challenge  I faced   35  years  ago.  I was full of  hope and  promise.  Back then in 1981, the  government and economy  is struggling .    Even engineering    graduates   have   limited opportunities  .

One of the leading  companies wrote me that   they have an opening   for technical  positions and that  requires   testing and research.      My task was to test  the  technical feasibility of   using  coconut oil as fuel for  commercial diesel engines.   The work  was  challenging since we have to test  the  durability of these engines  by operating them  continuously for long periods.  .   We also have to  run  prototype  vehicles from Manila to the Visayas  in order to simulate the  reliability of the fuel.

After  a certain period,   we have to  tear the engines   apart and inspect each of the engine members.    We measured  the critical parts and  analyzed   dimension  variances and  material  failures.    I enjoyed the work since  apart from the  creative  thinking process ,  I worked  with my hands.   Because of the small salary, I also have to teach during evening  to make  me  my  economic ends meet and  be  independent  from  my parents.

A moment  I vividly remembered is when  my rubber shoes  , a  saucony brand was deformed  because I  worked  long hours in the  laboratory.  The sole  was immersed in diesel  fuel and  in time,   affected the  rubber material.   The shoe formed an C shape, was   tainted of browns spots    and looks very unattractive  when I wear it in  gatherings.

After   all the  years I research,   I  was  transferred  to the main  office  to  be engaged in the corporate  operational  functions.   The  period of  working with my hands    gave me the wisdom and strength  to   analyze problems and make  touch decisions.

Looking back,   the  recipe    of   working  with  my hands   is  very memorable . It also  allowed me to appreciate the dignity of  working in the  bench to  fabricate   a steel  products or to be in the laboratory  to mix  a chemical  solution.    The outcome is always a product or a service    that we  can   benefit   a society  ;  whether it is  a school  ,  a factory,  a transport industry  or even a house of God.

THE IMPORTANCE  OF  SKILLS AND SPECIALIZATION.
Starting the  start of the  century,     business  environment   became  more demanding .  Employers place   more emphasis on adaptability , curiosity and learning a desirable attributes for employers .  A different kind of skill is needed . The need for problem solvers and decisions makers arises  to relieve the pain of clients .  Employees must answer  the execution question  of  “how to  get there”.     Technology takes time to trickle down   and  specializing in   a   certain niche  segment is vital.

This brings me  to a  case study of a   technical  specialist  named  Gerry.   He  can  disassemble and assemble back all the  parts of a  4 MW  diesel power plant  which is as big as this stage.   Machines will be machines .  All machines will require corrective and predictive maintenance  over a  period of time . (lahat ng makina na umiinit  ay ganyan).    There are 2000 parts and it still amazes me that he finds time to memorize each  of the parts.  Gerry also   helps purchasing to prepare the bill of materials  during the overhauling period.     When there is no parts in the inventory,  he will buy an high carbon steel   and machine the item  according to the required  specific dimension .  He himself developed this reverse engineering approach.

Employers   gave him a premium in his  salary because of his  innovations and   specialty in maintaining basis load power plants.   Additionally,  he was   always consulted  for important  decision when this involved  plant operations.   At the end of the day,  Gerry feels fulfilled since his value in the  corporation is always measurable.  The lesson here  my  dear graduates is  that  you  can never go wrong  with hard work  and being passionate  with  whatever interest you.    ( matalinong pagbabago  and kailangan  para ka maging kakaiba ).

SAMPLE CAREERS  FOR DUAL TECH  GRADUATES IN   THE FUTURE.

Other than the example of gerry’s   craving for innovation,   your skills  must be monetized  for specific industrial  applications.     I see the following  needed  skills  sets that  will be beneficial for the industrial market  since they involved  utility equipment:

-  Design and installation of small scale solar power plants.
-  Servicing of diesel power plants, compressors , pumps and heat exchangers .
- Measuring the systems losses in distribution lines  and replacing overheating electrical lines.
-  Installation of  solar power plant stations in  dead  real estate assets.

ROLE  TO  INCLUSIVE  DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH

Learning in  Dualtech  can also  be   answering  a vocation  to  service the community.   Inclusive development   is important to  help our government fight poverty.  A  business can be  inclusive  if its  sustainable and  if the work to be done  includes  the grass roots.    A  government that looks  far and wide    must bring   investments  outside the country side in order to  spread wealth and help minimize poverty.    Skilled workers  will always be  a catalyst in creating opportunities in the country side.  All told , this will be  bringing value to under-invested assets  such as :  waterproofing corroded  warehouse roofs,  building small  power plants for charging  of cell phones  or illumination, repairing  pumps  that are needed for irrigation,   maintaining  of small  reefer  vans  or  low temperature  container  in order to help  preserve    aqua marine product  and setting up  off grid solar power plant facilities.      Presently we have 27  Dualtech  direct hires and 19  on the job trainees in the Glacier Group of Companies .

(For growth to be sustainable, it must be multi sectoral, multi discipline and multi level. )

THE INCLINED PLANE

God owns the earth but its is rented to the daring .   There  are lot of opportunities  for  skilled  personnel like  Dualtech workers  and for sure  companies  will knock on your doors.  You will be given opportunities to grow  and you should accept every opportunity.

But remember that there will be  unpleasant  moments  and you need to always struggle.   You need to  persevere  in  cases of poor  results  and opposition  since you  are  part of a  big society.    (tibayan niyo loob niyo palagi  at tulungan niyo sarili niyo).   Your journey in life will always  be an inclined plane.  You must always be able to  go up the slope  with your dreams  no matter how steep  the slope is.

Lastly , You should have the energy and enthusiasm to move forward   for the   outcome is more  capable hands than our own.   You must learn to listen  and in listening you always learn. You must be the best the you can .   You can  be better  if you do this   for love   of your country,  your parents and  even   the people I mentioned earlier in this speech.

telfordFour (4) partner companies of Dualtech shared spaces in their facility for mentoring, coaching, and life skills training of Dualtech scholars.

In Dualtech’s Electromechanics training program, trainees study the basics of the course during the first six months. They cut to size a piece of metal, connect electrical devices, operate lathe machines, weld metals, draw simple isometric plans, and clean their work areas after each class.

Training is not just by doing the bare minimum. They can not simply pass their projects without putting their very best. They do not only focus on the technical aspect of the Electromechanics course, for training to be above the ordinary, it needs another important element – the right attitude towards work. At first, trainees might not have it yet, much less understand the value of working well. Somebody must mentor them the right things, not just once, but repeatedly for a period of time.

At Dualtech, the trainees attend the mentoring sessions weekly. These are interactive group discussions handled by experienced professionals who mostly come from the same industry where Dualtech trainees train. They follow a balanced curriculum which runs for eighteen months. In the learning sessions, trainees express their ideas freely; brainstorm with their classmates; and build teams. Usually, they hear talks that can be readily applied in daily life. As the program progresses, the trainees develop good criteria in decision making that translates to good relationships with their family members, friends, and colleagues at work.

artesyn-mentFour partner companies now provide rooms used as training stations to accommodate the weekly mentoring activities. These are Forms International in Caloocan, Handling Innovations in Parañaque, Artesyn in Rosario, Cavite, and Telford in General Trias, Cavite. Dualtech trainees are also doing their in-plant training in their factories. It helps the trainees to attend to weekly schedule and save them time and allowances.

Forms International and Handling Innovation also opened their venues to other trainees from other companies.

handling-mentMore partners value the mentoring program of Dualtech. Assisting the trainees develop technical know-how already spells a big difference. But when the support goes further, beyond the technical skills, partners would benefit on the productivity and proper right attitude.

kapihan-2016Dualtech organized a forum for partner companies regarding the partnership and Dual Training System

In this Kapihan, representatives from industries discussed their involvement in the Dual Training System (DTS). Dualtech has been listening to industry for the past 34 years. Academe-Industry cooperation does narrow the skills gap.

Dualtech listens so its curriculum and training plan for the students fulfills  the needs of the industry. The training hours required is no “field trip” as one participant stated. She grieves over the fact that some schools not even have a hundred hours of practicum which does not suffice for the safety briefing alone.

Says another company, “It is company prerogative to set hiring policies. We know what we need.”

Through DTS, the company does good to society.

The Kapihan has encouraged Dualtech to continue implementing DTS.

“I could give 100% support to continuing the education and getting scholars from Dualtech. We have 30 scholars who are now our regular employees” - Dina Gotis, HR Manager of Daiwa Seiko Philippines Corporation

“We are viewing this as our CSR. For us, after the tie up, we provide opening for people to work for us. We have more than a hundred trainees who went to our factory. We have gotten very positive comments from our partners in Malaysia, Singapore, and China on how these trainees perform in their factories.” Nory Araza, Operations Director, Telford SVC Philippines, Inc.

“I would like to give these kids the break and opportunity to grow and to develop. I support and continue this recruitment from Dualtech. The opportunity to train so they could join us or if they decide to leave, open better opportunities  by having qualification in applying for a job. Rest assured we will continue this CSR.” Patrick Cua, General Manager, Kooler Industries, Inc.

marubeni-fdn"Education is not about money, it is about happiness."Dr. Jose Sandejas

Marubeni Foundation gave acknowledgment to the sets of scholars who completed their studies at Dualtech at SGV Building, Makati City on November 21, 2016.  The Annual Scholars Night was an opportunity in celebrating excellence in the challenging academic and training environment. The scholars were gathered for their diligence and hard work to be recognized. What could be more inspiring to see and hear the alumni shared stories of their struggles and how they survived.

The audience was motivated by the inspiring message of Dr.  Jose Sandejas. In a brief remark, Dr. Sandejas mentioned two advantages of a technical vocational education. First, graduates have a higher percentage of employment compared to those who finished university training. Second, while employed, he can study further.

Dualtech trainees and graduates joined the get-together. Mr. Cris Vergara, Dualtech alumnus shared how Marubeni Foundation helped him pursue the 2-Year Electromechanics Technology at Dualtech Binondo Manila. Studying while earning was his desire, and he saw it possible at Dualtech. Upon enrolment, Duatech offered him scholarship under Marubeni Foundation Inc. He shared, “I am so blessed. Thank you Marubeni Foundation for the financial support. Through your assistance, I was also able to help my family.” He graduated in 2008 and worked in different companies. In 2011, he moved to Dualtech and works now as an Industrial Coordinator.

As of 2016, Marubeni assisted over 300 scholars who are all gainfully employed.

The friendship between Dr. Sandejas and the Yulo family, was also instrumental in establishing Dualtech in Carmelray, Canlubang Calamba City 25 years ago. The Yulo’s wanted a school in Carmelray. Dr. Sandejas offered the mission and vision of Dualtech  to help educate the less fortunate by forming them as morally upright persons and contribute to the industry by educating people in the technical aspects as well. And by the scholarship given by Marubeni to many trainees of Dualtech, it helped change their lives.

Marubeni Scholarship Foundation Inc. was established on October 16, 1989. The Foundation targets to help the less-fortunate youth realize their dream of education. Dr. Sandejas was former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Dualtech and now Vice President of Marubeni Scholarship Foundation.

dts-studyThe DTS program outweigh the cost of training the student/trainee.
