“. . .a good communicator gives you power, gain voice and become empowered”

Comm-skills-2016A workshop in communication skills for Dualtech Alumni was held in Dualtech Center on June 25, 2016. It was facilitated by Prof. Robert DV “Bobbet” Revilla. He is a Development Communicator and Head of Research and Development at Colegio De San Juan De Letran, Calamba. In the beginning of the session Prof. Bobbet discussed the guidelines of writing effectively, speaking well and nurturing both skills continously.

Alumni with background occupations such as Machinist, Sales and Marketing, Technical Support, Maintenance and Engineering in their respective companies were in attendance. The seminar was also attended by a Documentary Specialist from the Office of the President, Mr. Jeremy Feria for a common purpose, “Upang mapalalim pa ang nalalaman ko sa media”. He does documentaries that other media do not produce, stories that people do not experience in Metro Manila.

The seminar was aimed for alumni to become good communicators and to master effective and clear writing. “Challenges need to [be] overcome because a good communicator gives you power, gain voice and become empowered” Prof. Bobbet mentioned. He taught the alumni how to write clearly and concisely. “You need to be  specific because words are powerful.”

In the afternoon session Prof. Bobbet gave guidelines on proper gestures and how to be relaxed in speaking. Effective communication is important because it clarifies matters. As a worker, it helps us inform our direct report and our organization on our work progress.

Communication is not only about skills but about reminiscing and refreshing our experiences and learning. To become a good communicator is to become a good observer. Then we share these with others to help them improve.

Paulo Martinez: A Journey of an Alumnus

Paolo-Martinez"Work on your craft Everyday, Study and Master it... Be Passionate and Consistent! Be humble, be hungry and always be the hardworking person in the room."

On my way
My name is Paulo Martinez from Sto. Tomas, Batangas, my father was a driver and a farmer while my mother is a beautician. We are six in our family, I am second to the eldest. At a young age I was helping my father do the farming and doing part time jobs during weekends. In spite of difficulties in life, my  parents still sent us to school and pushed us to study hard. I never saw my parents stopping or getting tired doing multiple jobs just to have extra income. Since we're a big family everything was still not enough. Also my brothers and sisters were very sickly. Our family situation motivated me to work harder on my studies and help my family. At the age 10, I worked as gardener, baby sitter, while selling artworks and personalized drawings on the side. In high school I worked as Student Assistant and helper in our Parish and Convent. Since I have some skills in Arts I was able to work in a printing shop doing silk screen printing, diploma lamination, styro design and cutting. Yet life was tough and I almost stopped schooling. My teacher and the nuns helped me find some sponsor for me to finish high school.

I always dreamed of becoming an Architect or Engineer. Before graduating I was able to pass a scholarship offered by the Ayala Foundation and passed the entrance exam at Mapua Institute of Technology. Ayala Foundation required me at least to have a drafting course so I could work part time in their company to help cover my expenses.

I had some difficulty in finding a Drafting Course and was getting frustrated. I didn’t know if I would be able to sustain my education and funds were running out. I decided to go to Don Bosco, Canlubang to inquire about the drafting course. On the way, while resting at the Canlubang Terminal, I thought this will be the end of the road in fulfilling my dream to be an Architect. In front of me, were a group of young guys talking about Dualtech. The boys will be taking an entrance exam for a two-year scholarship course. I walked over to them and asked if I can join them. I passed the initial screening and the entrance exam. The next thing I knew, I was already enjoying the set of courses and how the school program works.

Each one of us are here not by chance it may be by fate or by the grace of God. Life is tough, life is difficult and sometimes life is unfair. Dualtech is a channel of blessing for each and everyone of us, to change our life and our future. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.

Dualtech Days.
Some of my best memories in Dualtech was having breakfast in a small store. We lined up for hot beef noodles with "calamansi” and “monay" It brought a special bond among us batchmates, sharing and eating. Another recollection is walking the long rough road going to Canlubang terminal. There were lots of shared memories happy and sad. Walking too was a time for self assessment. My martial arts class for PE -my obsession as I grew up watching Jacky Chan and Bruce Lee- helped me boost my morale and self-discipline. Lastly that of hiding from the mentors to avoid the one-on-one conversation. I always had some excuse but, the mentors patiently waited for me. I kept all these experience in Dualtech from my hometown folks and my high school batch mates. All they knew was I was enrolled at Mapua.

“Walking alone so many times I was able to let go and accept the reality and convince myself that God has prepared a unique path for everyone to meet or have their success. Then things become lighter easy and enjoyable.”

Start of a Career
I had my In-plant Training in the Engineering group at Toto Mariwasa, Sto. Tomas Batangas. I did electrical installation, repairs, PM, metal fabrication, etc. Before graduation, the company wanted to absorb me as an employee. I refused, wanting to seek other opportunities. My first job was in Canlubang Spinning Mills as Aircon-Electrical technician.  However, the textile environment affected my health and I become sickly. I went back to Dualtech and asked for any job opportunities. Atmel needed new technicians. I had no background in the semiconductor industry so I was not expecting to be chosen. The Engineering Manager asked me what I have to offer to his team. I told him I am very passionate in what I do and I may not be the best but I am very hardworking. Two weeks later, Atmel HR called and requested that I report for work. Due to my limitations, I only had two tasks for my first month.  I mastered the art of making half threaded screw and improved the output until we had overstocks. I improved the mixture of epoxy for the contact finger to make it perfectly set inside the oven. I lengthened the life of springs thus, minimizing returns due to poor workmanship. From then on,  the senior technician trained me well on my first machine. So well even in my dreams I am still working on the machine. I always make sure that everyday I learn something, I ask something and practice it to perfection. Because my motivation is if something happens and the company needs to layoff workers, one of the 1st candidates would be me.

I met my wife in the same company. We started a family and continued my career. From a simple technician, zero, level up to senior then junior supervisor.

Thru exposure and training I was able to move up and was even sent to Germany for two months training and production benchmarking. I always train and share knowledge to my team first to make my life easier. Second to learn more from teaching and project deliberation. I was promoted to Project Engineer of New Product Industrialization. This involves Feasibility Study up to Production Qualification. It was my biggest break.

My advice: Do not stop learning, upgrade yourself and acquire more skills and knowledge. God maybe up to something bigger for you. Take some trade test, practice your skills in basic household needs or schools needs, study if you have the opportunity. Do this while you have the time. If you're not on the in-plant training, or you don't have any family yet to support, take the EETEAP, or licensure exams or skills upgrade.

Everybody is asking when would be my big break but the big question is are you ready for it, are you doing something to attain it? How are you going to sustain if the big opportunity comes?

Career Risk
After 11 years in Atmel I took the biggest risk and challenge of my life. I got out of my comfort zone. I was able to join an expanding business in Singapore. Thru dedication, acquired knowledge and passion I became successful in breaking the 5-year highest sales for three consecutive years. I was able to travel to Asia several times. After getting the trust and confidence of our Singapore Headquarters we expanded in the Philippines.

Dualtech does not teach us all, only bits and pieces of knowledge and skills that we could use to find our own success. They teach us, more importantly, to become a better person, a better youth, a better Filipino. We were trained to survive no matter the circumstances. We were motivated to pickup ourselves and start over again in times of failure. We were inspired to excel and perform with passion and love. But most of all we were blessed that we have God to carry us when all else failed, to guide us and pick us up along the way.

We can.
If the others have done it and made their lives better we can also do it and even do it better. I don’t call myself successful “already” because I still need to work hard everyday. I have new sets of goals to fulfill and accomplish for my family. When I look back I've gotten so far than I ever imagined. I never thought of traveling overseas in an airplane and even driving my own car. Even being entrusted to setup a manufacturing facility and organize an elite group of Technicians and Engineers for the semiconductor industry.

It is our duty and moral obligation to return this favour to the society and continue the cycle to the next generation. Not all stories are the same. Not everyone becomes victorious. But with God's grace we would be able to have fulfillment, joy and successes. Thank you Dualtech for the untiring effort, love, support, passion of all staff and members. Thank you my Alma Mater for continuously nourishing us with overwhelming support and inspiration.

Paulo Martinez is the  Product and Engineering Manager for Philippine operations of Transcendt. His company is located at LTI PEZA. His company is undergoing a 5-year development plan thus he plans to hire  Dualtech alumni and hopefully have scholars as trainees.

Bringing Up Children

educhild2016The basic foundation in good relationship comes from one's upbringing in the family.

In the course of seven Sundays that started last May 22, Dualtech Center organized a Parenting Course with the support of EDUCHILD Foundation.

EDUCHILD stands for Education for the Upbringing of Children. It believes that Parenting is an acquired skill rather than a collection of techniques and concepts. The best way to learn these skills is to experience it through simulation of real life situations. Thus, for seven Sundays participants went over, discussed and argued “real-life scenarios” about parenting. EDUCHILD applies the Case Method of instruction.

EDUCHILD reminded the parents to provide time to nurture their child and cultivate a home atmosphere that is positive and caring. How parents treat their child creates basic emotional lessons that influence a child’s interaction with others.

Opus Dei Vicar General Visits Dualtech

“. . . the faithful of the Work involved in personal undertakings of Opus Dei should live in unity with each other and to live it with humility.”

On April 14, 2016, the Vicar General of Opus Dei, Msgr. Mariano Fazio, visited Dualtech to give two separate get-togethers: one with the faithful of the Prelature and some staff of Dualtech and the other one with the members of the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross in the Southern Tagalog Region. Highlights of the get-together were the latest news coming from the Prelate of Opus Dei, Bishop Javier Echevarria. His message was that the faithful of the Work involved in personal undertakings of Opus Dei should live in unity with each other and to live with humility and charity.

Considering the many souls that are being taken cared of in school, students and staff alike, everybody should breathe this spirit.  A one anecdote was his encounter with Pope Francis after his appointment as Vicar General. The Pope had given him a 55-minute audience and was pleased with his news. Jokingly, the Pope told him what the people are going to say that he received his appointment because he is a friend of the Pope back in Argentina. He  highlighted the humility of Pope Francis, in being open to suggestions on how to improve his role as the successor of Peter.

The role of the Vicar General of Opus Dei is to assist the Prelate in tasks of government. The Prelate can now focus more in his role as Father and shepherd to the faithful of the Work and those who attend the means of formation in Opus Dei. The apostolate and spiritual formation of Dualtech is entrusted to the Prelature of Opus Dei.

Msgr. Mariano Fazio was born in Buenos Aires on April 25, 1960. He studied History at the University of Buenos Aires and received a doctorate in Philosophy from the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross.
In 1991, he was ordained a priest by Saint John Paul II, after having worked for seven years in Ecuador as a professor of Philosophy of Law and editorial writer for the newspaper El Telégrafo.

From 1996 to 2002, in Rome, he was the first dean of the School of Church Communications, and then, from 2002 to 2008, the rector of the same university. During the same period, he was elected president of the Conference of Rectors of the Pontifical Universities of Rome.

In 2007, he was named an expert for the Fifth General Conference of Bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean, which was held in Aparecida, Brazil. Several months later, he returned to South America, where he has served, until now, as the Vicar of Opus Dei in Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia.
He is the author of more than 20 books on modern society and the process of secularization. One of his recent books, Pope Francis: Keys to His Thought, has been translated into English. (Source http://opusdei.org/en-us/)

St. Joseph, An Inspiration To CGK Formaprint Fathers

cgkDualtech Center gave a talk about fatherhood at CGKFormaprint for its father employees during the Feast Day of St. Joseph

March 19, is the Feast Day of St. Joseph. While we know much about Mary the mother of Jesus and Jesus Christ, we hardly hear anything about St. Joseph. Yet we can learn so much from the silence. To observe the event, CGK Formaprint invited Dualtech to deliver an inspirational talk to its employees at its Pasay City Office. The employees, especially the fathers, could all learn from the life of St. Joseph.

St. Joseph was a model family man and worker (carpenter). A role that  can be identified with and imitated. Here are some lessons to learn:

1.  St. Joseph protects because he respects. A husband respects his wife and daughter/s. Treating women with utmost delicateness. A husband’s mere physical presence at home offers security and safety.

2. St. Joseph provides for the family. Husbands try to provide for the spiritual, economic and physical needs of the family. St. Joseph was a prayerful man. And obeyed the wishes of God for his family. He worked as a carpenter to supply the daily needs of the home. Jesus learned the craft of St. Joseph. His family had a home, where Jesus lived, which they occupied for so many years.

3. St. Joseph fulfills the dreams or ambitions of fathers towards their children. Jesus became what He is with the guidance of St. Joseph. Children learn the virtues from what they see in their father. A father lives and teaches the virtues, especially Faith, Hope and Charity. We can imagine St. Joseph -and ourselves- being an example to Jesus (our children) in living the other virtues e.g. self-control, leadership, industriousness, responsibility, etc.

The relationship of St. Joseph with Mary and Jesus is something we can cherish and nourish in our respective families.

A Generous Couple: Mr. & Mrs. Jack Herbster

Jack and Amor“It is not only in business you can grow your money; you can spend it when you give it to the right person. He will grow it because he would start earning, so then he could also help somebody. This is our investment”

This is the living principle of Mr. and Mrs. Herbster who have helped many scholars through financial assistance and parenting. Life is very simple for them. They are blessed with material wealth; and this gift is shared to the poor most especially to the young ones who have still hopes to succeed.

To be part of Dualtech mission was an easy decision, a slumdunk as described by Jack Herbster. He attributed it to the Holy Spirit that led them to Dualtech. It was in 2014 when they attended an Educhild seminar together with the other parents to learn their key role in the family. But since the language used was in Tagalog which is a foreign language for Jack, they diverted their attention into something more meaningful – to sponsor students. Mr. Jack Herbster shared, “When I saw the student who started the training from the basic, for me it is everything. That is a strong program. I dont see the end product but I see the beginning.” Ms. Amor Herbster added, “Dualtech is apostolate. They  want to give the people the CHANCE.  That is the one that got us here. They take the risk that they could able to form the person.”

Before they engaged with Dualtech, they did it differently and it was not always a success story. They have thought of what is good to somebody is what they think is good for them. It is not true. Scholars have to ask for what they need that serves them a good purpose. They cause them to think for themselves and commit for their education. Still, there are ungrateful fellows regardless of the support given but it never change their heart. These experiences helped them to do better.

One scholar told them, “I want to finish. I want to become an engineer, but I don't want to be an engineer to do engineering work, I want to teach engineers” This passion exists in many scholars who also take responsibility for the family. They do not mind being a janitor, or getting a meager allowance. They assume responsibilities of parents who could no longer be parents to them. The important thing for them they said “they come to you with a problem, one thing you should not do is have them go away. We give them hope or we send to somebody else to give them hope.” In this situation, they pray, talk about it, and brainstorm. “This is really something in life that the holy spirit works on us. The thing is we all have to be sensitive when we are dealing with these people because we all have Jesus inside of us.” Their objective is to be a parent to them so they could somehow improve the lives of their scholars. Though they do not have  their own biological child, this does not limit them to being a good parent to the many. They believe on the importance of family.

“We only give. We do not benefit from them and we help to multiply the graces of God. God always says, Save soul. You cannot save soul if you let your money sit down there. We will not see the benefit, you wont see it. But God will see the benefit and that is glorifying Him.” One scholar helped means one soul saved.

This chance of helping brings them joy. Ms. Amor Herbster was poor all her life and it  was her desire that when she was given the chance to make others happy, she will do it.

In the end, what they hope for scholars is to be self sufficient and be formed with their faith. With this, they will be thankful to the Lord God. When they do that, it is the only way they can say they are successful. For as long as they live, it is their mission, a lifetime project.

Boarding House, Another Home

$

bh-ladiesnGentA group of landladies and landlords organized a Boarding House Association to help scholars stay in Canlubang, Calamba City while completing the 6-month basic training at Dualtech. Over the years, more than 2,000 trainees took their temporary shelter in nearby villages. And about 400 scholars from Bicol, Ilocos Region, Palawan, Leyte, MIMAROPA, Cebu, and Bohol are now staying in the boarding houses. These provinces are places where Dualtech's help to young people is appreciated. For the start of training, boarding houses are needed to accommodate these scholars.

There are 15 boarding houses managed by the Titos and Titas of Dualtech scholars. They provide bed spacers. They meet weekly to discuss concerns among trainees and help one another based on their experiences. Just like in a family, trainees have their assignment for housekeeping and schedule for meals and laundry needs. Through their chores, they also acquire interpersonal relationship and the value of “pakikisama” which they would then apply while deployed in different factories.

Though many stories are told in school, experiences in the boarding house are also lessons they bring even after their stint at Dualtech.

Tita Beth Dalusong is the President of the Boarding House Association. The  landladies and landlords are consulting her about cases that may be difficult to handle. Tita Beth started accommodating students since 2007 with 30 boarders and the number grew to 70.  Common concern is the misunderstanding of boarders among others but she is still able to manage it ”Kung may 10 kang anak, 6 diyan ang pasaway”. One memorable case was when a group of students hid lambanog under the bed. She immediately instructed them to throw it at the creek and never drink liquor again as it is prohibited also at Dualtech.

In cases of sickness, lack of financial support from the parents, and immediate need for medical requirements, Tita Beth lent her own budget to students who were in this difficult situation.

For them to be motivated, Tita Beth also shared her experiences in life. For Tita Beth, family needs full attention. “Ang pagiging pamilya dapat nakikita, dapat nararamdaman. Kung minsan, kung sino pa yung hindi mo kamag-anak o kapamilya sa kanila pa tayo nakakaramdam ng pagmamahal ng isang tunay na pamilya.

She still has graduates who stay in the boarding house. Some still go back to her on special occasions. Her passion to help these scholars is reflected on these boarders who pay back a visit and support other scholars in need.

Tita Carol Dizon, a mother and a landlady for 11 years, sees her role as much more than being a mother “Hanggat kaya, talagang ituturing kong mga anak”. She has 27 boarders from Ilocos, Lucban, Mindoro, Aurora and in Cainta who are undergoing the in-plant training.

It is just normal that scholars will miss their family, but as a landlady and guardian she always  remind them about the importance of their training. She would always tell them the rules of Dualtech.

Together, she brings the trainees to church every Sunday morning with her son. She gathered them in the afternoon to watch movies and have a short talk about their personal concerns.

She believes that a family should respect each other, and correct one another if needed.

Tito Jay Milo was born in Bohol.  Tito Jay started putting up a boarding house in November 2015. Tito Jay and his wife are the only two living in their house since his son and daughter have their own houses. Most of his boarders are from Bohol too where he grew up. They are happy to have boarders with them because they do not feel alone anymore.

As their guardian, he motivates them whenever they felt difficulty on their training especially in the academics. He always makes time for them especially for parental advise. Now, he is making some renovation on his house to be larger and comfortable inside. He said “Pinapaayos namin ito para mas maging comfortable ang mga boarders, para hindi sila mainitan at maging maluwag sa loob. Napapakinabangan ko naman sila, dapat nasusuklian ito. Hindi ko pinapaayos to para dumami pa, same number of boarders pa din pero mas komportable na sila”.

He portrays the father-role in the house. Even if some boarders once have not followed house rules, by heart he helped them to realize good future ahead of them.

Tita Didith Miller was a full time mom who started getting Dualtech boarders in 2006. Her first boarders are mostly from the Bicol region. Like some other landladies, she has set her own rules and regulation as they enter the boarding house.

She has three boarders whom she helps by allowing them to stay at no cost. These three scholars came from poor family and their parents could not afford to send a regular allowance. The stories of these three students touched her heart. She sees a promising future in them because of their attitude and desire to help their family.

They are called the Titos and Titas; but the trainees look at them as their parents in the absence of their real parents in the province who then work hard to send their sons for training. And just like their parents, they take it as a responsibility to instill to trainees the high morals and discipline of which Dualtech also teaches in school.

People call it “Boarding Houses”, but this group of landladies and landlords redefined it as Boarding Homes where trainees would feel the family atmosphere with them.

A Strong-value System

j-bermudoIn Dualtech, a new door has been opened to me. To be happy is really to discover that we owe our lives to God. We ought to live with that knowledge and bring others to know it as well. So through what we do, the world would understand this message. When I had my in plant training, I realized that if you did not have a strong value-system, it was very easy to get absorbed by easy lifestyles and temptations of worldliness and materialism.  - Mr. Jovanie B. Bermudo | Gold Merit, Outstanding In-Plant and In-School Training Performance and Learning Excellence Awardee, Class Valedictorian; Trained at Tri Quint Asia LLC, Employed at Universal Robina Corporation

I came from Bicol and transferred only in Laguna because my mother worked here. I was happy to be with my beloved mother whom I used to see only during short visits during vacation time. She taught me how to pray, to go to Mass at Don Bosco in Santa Rosa, eventually becoming a sacristan in that parish.

Being with my mother was short lived because she died of illness when I was in first year high school. It was painful to lose someone you love at an early age. It took time before I was able to move on with my life. Because of this I had to pick up the pieces together and help my father to support the family. I sold merienda items: balut and banana que.

I also worked as a carwash boy, gardener, and other jobs. Because of this I somehow grew cold and my mass attendance and service to the church waned. The struggle was hard; I did not know if ever I would still be able to continue studying and get a stable job.

This would not have been possible had I not met a kindly couple; Mr. Jack and Mrs. Amor Herbster. They introduced me to Dualtech. I could recall that my experience in studying here in Dualtech was filled with many challenges and hardwork. In every aspect, one will learn the value of working and the need to improve in order to achieve a lot. It is not important just to earn a living; it is important also to know how to live as a good individual. A person must realize that his life has a definite purpose here on earth. That each person must strive to do his best to do better, be it at school, in the workplace, in the community, in the market, or anywhere. All life is precious because it is God-given.

In Dualtech, a new door has been opened to me.

Dear fellow graduates, let us be careful here! Let us not forget, for this will give us the light to journey through the seemingly dark and complicated world!

Dualtech has taught us well! “I will not lie, I will not cheat, I will not steal, I will not tolerate those those who do! I will act gentlemanly at all times, always upholding the name of Dualtech wherever I go, so help me GOD!”. These are the words of Dualtech’s Code of Honor which we learned early in our studies here. May we always live it and practice it wherever we are. For most importantly we have to live as men of Honor! We are Honorable men! If not, we are NOTHING!

We thank our partner companies for the opportunities given to us!
We thank our benefactors who were very generous to us!
We thank all those who taught, formed, and forged us in this school, Dualtech!
We thank each other for the brotherhood and the joy of learning together and sharing similar struggles and learning!

May we prosper and continue the good work we learned!

Value The Gifts of Marriage

kasalan-2015“The joy of Love experienced by families is also the joy of the Church.” The desire to marry and form a family remains vibrant, . . . this is an inspiration to the Church.” - Amoris Laetitia

Dualtech Center has helped organize, guide, counsel, and facilitate the  wedding of five couples during the feast day of St. Josemaria Escriva on January 09, 2016 held at St. Joseph Parish Church in Canlubang, Calamba City.

The story of these 5 couples, and so many other couples, avoided -what they thought- are the high cost of getting married in Church plus all the other expenses and complications related to the wedding ceremony. Yet these couples displayed characteristics of deep affection, responsibility towards the children and ability to overcome trials. But they missed out on the blessings and graces of God. The ComRel presented reasons and motivations for choosing marriage to help the couples better respond and enjoy the benefits of the Sacrament of Marriage.  Dualtech ComRel has proven that weddings can be simple and cost less.

For many years these couples have been living together, raising a family through sheer human and natural effort. Today, they enjoy the full benefit of grace that goes with the Sacrament of Marriage allowing their relationship to be raised to supernatural level.

One of the couples commented, “As most people think, Kasalang bayan is not an ideal way to get married. Most couples want to get married on their own, as they think that it will only happen once in their lives. Kasalang bayan shows the importance of marriage and family.
It is our vocation and way to holiness that we will take together as one. We value our marriage by making Christ as the center of our relationship.”

The wedding was solemnized by Fr. Nico Corvera, an alumnus of Dualtech.

To the officers, staff of Dualtech, the distinguished sponsors that have made all of this possible, to the graduates and their parents and all the people who helped them through the difficult times to finish this course. Good Morning!

Today is truly special for you graduates as we stand here to recognize the good work you did and we know how hard it is to complete this course. It is not easy and I am glad that you persevere in doing this. Today is also special for your sponsoring firms and other people who are helping you as you recognize them for the special support they extended to you. Were it not for your sponsors, your family and supporters, you are not able to have completed this course.

Today we also recognize the good work of Dualtech. We started a long time ago, I guess most of you were not born yet. We hosted Dualtech in the Mantrade building. It is in the corner of EDSA and Pasong Tamo, and over the years Dualtech left Mantrade to go to Mandaluyong and other sites and finally here. This place is really impressive and I believe Dualtech will produce more skilled workers for the country.

I would like to give three (3) points which I think are important to remember for today:

1. KNOW YOUR PRODUCT. As worker in a manufacturing firm you will be part of the chain of work that converts raw material or components into some finish product. You are one link in that chain. As a member of that chain you must do work well or else the product will fail. So you must look at yourself as part of the chain, not only as individual but as part of something bigger and you will have the satisfaction that you produce something bigger larger than yourself. As you know, the weakest link causes the chain to fail.

2. BE PART OF TEAM. Cooperation is the key to success for the whole team. You are part of the larger scale of things. You must be sure that you do your work well with cooperation of workers before you and the workers after you. You also understand that your work means you must help each other, remove your blinder, open yourself to what is before you. Understand the job, understand the role in that chain so you can understand the role in the whole process.

3. WORK ON CONTINUING LEARNING. This is not the end, this is the start of the learning process. Learning must never stop. If you stop you fall behind. The need for your skills that you already acquired today and in the past is being changed everyday by technology. Technology that is used to produce your product. So be curios, read, study, observe the whole process. Do not just look on what you are doing or the ones before you and after you. Listen to what is going around you and what is happening to your company and to that product line. Remember you are one unit in the whole universe, but that universe is very exciting particularly for you guys now the world is changing so fast. It is a challenge and you must keep up to that challenge with hard work, mindset of learning, and that you could be ready for that challenge in the future.

If you persist in your work and be a learning worker; not only worker who are you now or a worker of who you will be tomorrow, but a continuing learner.

As graduates, you should upgrade your skills. There are many ways to do that. Dualtech is here, but in your job, your company is offering upgrading seminars, Kaizen project that will help you. Be an active participant in everything that your company or your community has.

Reserve time not only for your work but a balance life. To balance life means not only with your family or with your work but also with your community and prepare yourself to be truly productive citizens for the country.

You are all young. I wish I were at your age group again but it is too late for me. The future is bright and exciting but your success really is in your hands. Dualtech prepares you not only with skills but proper mind set and attitude for the good future.

Congratulations again. Lets work together for the future of our country. Thank you!

Grad-Oct-2016It was indeed a pleasure for me to be invited to commencement ceremony. I was fortunate to meet Marvin Adolfo in the ECOP conference last month and I was also thankful to meet Arnold Morfe when I visited your school recently. I was very impressed by what I heard and by the success story of Dualtech which was established 25 years ago. I am very happy that your school has produced about 7000 scholars in Canlubang, Calamba City and has helped so many families through the valuable technical education it has imparted.

Let me tell you the story of Carmelray and how it was started 26 years ago in 1990. My father, Ramon A Yulo passed away in 1982 because of cancer and a long bout of heart disease and hypertension. He left behind a family of young children and we were forced to grow up and fend for ourselves. I was 19 when my dad died and I was second year college at the Ateneo. When he passed away, I decided to change course and took up Business Management because I knew I had to work for the family. I went to Germany in Heidelberg and I studied my Masters there in 1988. When I came back to Manila, we had our first sale with BASF. My sister and I then decided to start a company to do industrial development and Carmelray was born in 1990. Carmelray came from the name of my parents- Carmen and Ramon A. Yulo. Carmelray was born because we had a vision of having a company that would give jobs and spur employment in the Canlubang area, especially after we stopped planting sugar. It was to embody the legacy of my father and we wanted to promote the values we believed in- hard work, integrity, justice, care and compassion.

If you look at the names in the park, you will see the vision we had. My sister and I named the streets in the park and we thought having names with good value would elicit the good vibes. We chose characters and values that we hoped would embody the new Filipino and also characteristics that we hoped the country could aspire for.  Notice the names- Progress, Unity, Wisdom, Prosperity, Industry, Excellence, Integrity,  etc.  All the street names from Morningfields were also named after good characters and values. We also had a vision that we wanted to keep the heritage and legacy of Canlubang and wanted to preserve the story of the old town. We put up the Mills Country Club trying to relive the old recreation center in Canlubang and we wanted to honor and respect my grandfather, Jose Yulo and my father, Ramon Yulo.

I also wanted to share with you some of my beliefs and nuggets of wisdom to help you as you go thru your careers. Today is a momentous occasion as you go out to the world. But remember these after you graduate.

1. Be the Best You can Be
Work hard and follow your dreams. Believe in yourself.

2. Let God Lead You in your Life
Have God as your cornerstone as you go thru your career. Whenever you are needing guidance, pray. Pray hard and ask for wisdom.

3. Stay Strong in Your Values
Integrity – don’t compromise and do what is right
Fairness and Justice
Compassion- care for your family and community
Generosity- having a giving heart

4. Dream – Go beyond your boundaries. Never give up.
I always believed that when I went abroad to study, I learned so much. Fending for myself taught me to be strong and independent. When I came back to Manila, I brought back the skills I learned. So I always believe that we should push ourselves beyond our comfort zone.

5. Give back.
My motto is to whom much is given, much is expected.
When we have achieved our success and have enough, it is our turn to help others and share our blessings.

That is basically the lessons I would like to share.  In the end, our life is not judged by how much wealth we have, but how good a life we have lived sharing our gifts and talents with the world so we can make a difference.

Thank you Dualtech. I wish the graduates of this batch all the success in the future. Dream your dreams, make a mark and be the best you can be.

I also congratulate the parents and families who have supported this graduating class.  The success of your children is your success too.  Wishing your children the best in their future. We need good people to help our country and I am sure your children will be the epitome of the model worker/ employee / manager that our country needs.

A Different Perspective

j-cruzI can tell from experience, to those who think they are “poor” – no one is really so poor as to have nothing to share – you can be strong to be source of strength. I have seen the witness shown by my friends who helped me along. Let us be the future of this country. Let us pledge to help in return.  -- JOSH RHOBERT CRUZ | Merit, In-School and In-Plant Performance, and Learning Excellence Awardee; Trained at Temic Automotive, Inc.

As far as I can remember, I’ve attended eleven graduations as a student here in Dualtech. From the last Dualtech graduation in the university that I used to enroll, up to the time that the graduations were already held here in Canlubang. I watched all the Salamat Po Speeches of each batch representatives, various stories of facing challenges and how they survive. I have the same story to tell but from a different perspective.

I used to be enrolled in a university in Pasig but because of pressures, lack of focus with university life and overly conscious on what will my career should be without having concrete plans ahead, I quit after two years of staying there. My Spiritual Director in the university, an Opus Dei priest, strongly suggested to me to try a school in Canlubang that I might fit in and that is Dualtech. My parents and I came here two years ago, and Sir Ding toured us around and the first thing that got my attention was the Mechanical Laboratory, students were filing a piece of metal in Benchwork. It was dirty and they looked tired while doing it. I am not exposed to doing such works. Another thing that bothered me is that it will be also my first time to be far away from Marikina and stay here all alone. Puzzled with the advice given to me by my spiritual director, what will be in store for me here in Dualtech?

Nag-apply ako maging parte ng one year program. Isa sa mga formation talks namin natutuhan ko na “that I can be more effective if I would think less of myself. And to appreciate what I have by practicing gratitude and giving more.” May isang payo akong natanggap dito na lagi ko naaalala “failure is an event and not a person.”

And now I’m here representing our batch to give thanks to those who made all things possible the reason why we are graduating.
To our parents and family members for the undying love and support the reason we were able to achieve this milestone in our life we thank you.
To my classmates and friends here in Dualtech. Thank you for all the random inspiring stories and support especially on times I’m doubting myself. You always remind me that it’s better to give than to receive.

Thank you to our advisers, industry coordinators, mentors and coaches. For believing, guiding and most especially challenging us to make us tougher and more confident in facing fears and difficulties both here in school and in the plant.

To Continental Temic and the rest of the sponsoring industry partners for this batch, thank you for the opportunity of allowing us to be trained further in your companies to enhance our skills and knowledge to be more equip to the industry standards.

Thanks to Fr. Gary Soria, for convincing me to take this chance of enrolling in this school. I’m still finishing the puzzle, for it is still not complete. I’m still figuring things out. I’m  convinced the reason why I’m here in Dualtech is not only to have a job and to have better future, but truly to grow as a person and be humble enough to say yes to God’s will always, to inspire and influence more people with the same struggles in life as I have.

To Dualtech, for your generosity of giving us hope, opportunity and transformation. This is a school not only for technical skills to develop, but it also helps its students to go beyond, discovering their purpose which makes them live life full of meaning and determination. You taught me to adapt in order to be more human with my dealings in life. I came here almost nobody believes in me, but you strengthened and boosted my self-confidence by motivating me to fight all types of challenges.

And most especially, to Our Dear Father God Almighty, for guiding us up to now and not to abandon us in this journey of life.

To my fellow graduates, graduation is not the end but the beginning of something new. We need to share all that we have learned in Dualtech, and serve as inspiration to others. Like what Nick Vujicic said, he’s a motivational speaker without arms and legs, “if you cannot find a miracle, then try to be a miracle to others.” I saw this happens in Dualtech. I can tell from experience, to those who think they are “poor” – no one is really so poor as to have nothing to share – you can be strong to be source of strength. I have seen the witness shown by my friends who helped me along. Let us be the future of this country. Let us pledge to help in return.

Resilience to Challenges in Life

“Ako ay nagpapasalamat sapagkat mas naging matatag ako sa mga pagsubok, pagkasyahin ang allowance, magtiis sa nilagang itlog, agahan, tanghalian at hapunan na pa minsan-minsan pa ay dalawang beses nalang kumakain sa isang araw. Sinadya kong di ito ipaalam sa magulang ko noong una sapagkat ginusto kong maranasan ang hirap na kung tutuusin ay baliwala nalang sa mga taong tunay na walang makain."

JOHN RUSSEL PINEDA | Merit, Outstanding In-School and In-Plant, and
Learning Excellence Awardee| Trained at Vishay Philippines, Inc.

Be the best person as we can and strive to do the best everyday not only for us but also to the people surrounding us in order to inspire, to motivate, and to share the things we learn. Lastly, to continue upholding the name of Dualtech wherever we go.

temic-dec-2016"I want to recognize and acknowledge that I was amazed that Dualtech has served not only in Luzon but gone as far as Visayas and Mindanao. I became a scholar because of good institution like Dualtech and I was a scholar from High School up to College. With being (1) Malayo ang tingin, (2) Masayahin, (3) Magaling, (4) Marami pa ang dadating, and (5) Madasalin, I will be expecting to see Dualtech graduates to be one of the best in whatever field they are in." -- Mr. Norman S. Gayloa, Country HR Head | Temic Automotive Philippines, Inc.

I prepared a speech 2 weeks ago when I was invited to speak before you. And after realizing this morning the struggles of being a student, I decided to speak from the heart. This is really an honor to be invited by Dualtech for their 34th Anniversary and going to 35th year. Congratulations Dualtech! And did you know that this year we expect 3.7 Million enrolled in College around the country. On that 3.7 Million graduates, we expect about 580,000 in engineering and technology and you know how many graduated in the expected 580,000? 15%. Congratulations, you are among who graduated this year.

I also want to recognize and acknowledge that I was amazed that Dualtech has served not only in Luzon but gone as far as Visayas and Mindanao. So I decided to share with you my story. I was also a scholar like you. I became a scholar because of good institution like Dualtech and I was a scholar from High School up to College. There was a time in my college days that I had no allowance. You are very lucky that you have allowance and even free lunch. I had no allowance during my college days. I needed to take my toilet into public malls to just get the thing done.

I want to share with you some of my secrets in life. These are secrets because I believe that because of these five secrets I had been through, I became what I am today. Take note.

Noon gusto mo makapagtapos, now you should know what you want five years from now. Yun lang ang libre sa buhay. Libre ang mangarap. Did you know that, 5 years from now, things will change. We are talking already in industry where  everything is automated. That is going to be big in industry like us where one person can operate. All the inventories will be coming into eye glass. And everything will be managed remotely. We expect also the consumption of work, the machine work will be like operated by robots. We have now 1 robot in our plant now that works, 24 hours a day without benefits, because it was a robot. Next year we are expecting 3 robots working 24 hours  per day. So that’s my point, kailangan malayo ang ating tingin.

2. Masayahin. Smile and the whole world smiles at you. Despite of your problems, who want to be with negative people? We all want to be with happy people. So even the entire life is so rough, and difficult, you always look at the world half-full instead of half-empty. Dapat lagi tayo masaya kahit mahirap ang buhay. You know what, when you smile and maintain a happy disposition, your age be at least 5 to 10 years younger. The world is tough, but we want to be with happy people.

3. Magaling. Every company would want their people to be competent. And kailangan pag magaling, you should be the best wherever you are. You should not stop studying, you should not stop learning. Because we have to be ahead of our field.

4. Marami pa ang dadating. When I was still studying, sabi ko sa sarili ko “marami pa ang dadating kahit isang beses lang ako kakain”. It's that hope that gives up light and inspires us to continue in our life. Libre lang naman ang mangarap. And when you have an opportunity to join a company, wag ka maging madamot sa talent mo. You share your talent because you can also learn from the others. And it also inspire you to learn more.

5. Madasalin. At some point in your life, there would be ups and downs. In our 30 years of marriage, we will not survive without God in life. And in my company, with now 2,000 employees in the Philippines and Continental Temic is just 1% of Continental around the world. Continental is a 40 Billion Euro Company with 220,000 employees around the world. Imagine that. And you have given the responsibility in the Philippines. And our vision is to have at least 10% of Continental Business for the PH. There is nothing impossible with God. I have proven that in 30 years of marriage and and in my career kailangan hindi natin kalimutan ang Diyos. I have terminated 3 managers in the last 3 years because of lost trust and integrity. Honesty and integrity is the most important. I hired a technical graduate like you. He was very inspiring and visionary and competent. From technical school, he pursued his college degree and master's degree and became supervisor in 3 years and there was an offer for manager job that happened last week. Because of honesty and integrity issue I have to let him go. So that is how important God is in our life. Because only Him can sustain our values. As you go higher in an organization, you will be tempted with several things. Because the higher position given to you, the higher resources you will have.

With that 5 M’s, I will be expecting to see you all one of these days to be one of the best in whatever field you are in. There is no Mountain that is too high that you cannot climb.

That would be all. Thank you.

Exude that Quality which Made us Whole

buccahanAfter Dualtech, after the happiness of this day would have subsided. When we will be working out there, earning our living. Starting a family. Being with friends or with our loved ones. We ought to exude that quality which made us whole-the quality of being virtuous men (men with virtue). Good examples to other, whether in life and in work.

- CRESENTE BUCCAHAN, Class Valedictorian | Gold Merit, Outstainding In-School and In-Plant Performance, and Learning Excellence Awardee | Trained and Employed at Philippine Manufacturing Company of Murata, Inc.

I am Crescente Buccahan from Diadi, Nueva Vizcaya. Our main source of livelihood is farming. Most often, before we even get any profit from it; our earning was gone, to pay for our loans and others, If we had the misfortune of experiencing a Typhoon or drought; there would not be anything left for us to buy our food. This was the kind of life and hardship, I had from the very start. The five children in our family had been lucky to be able to attend elementary and highschool due to scholarships given by our parish. I still remember, our allowance was only P 50 every week. It was divided so that, P 20 was reserved for our fares. While P30 was reserved for our personal needs. And if you are thrifty you would be able to save some amount for your personal uses. It is no longer true today.

Now, upon finishing highschool; college was another matter. We did not have the funds for it either. A break came when a private school offered so that I could study there as a working student. I did not know everybody there. My job as a working student consisted of mopping the front of the school every morning, cleaning the CR's of the whole school in my free time. After school hours, I had to sweep the floor from fifth floor up to the first floor. Afterwards; before I go home, I had to make another round at the fifth floor to check the classroom C.R, turn off  lights, fans, aircons or faucets if any were left open or running. During weekends  I had to go to the farm owned by the school owner to plant corn. This was how my life evolved. But when I reached second year college, I could not sustain it anymore, I had to stop my studies altogether and I just went back to help my parents at our farm.

I tried all sorts of jobs available like in a poultry farm, in construction, as a machine operator. Where I would only last for 6 months. I really wanted to finish my studies. And so I enrolled  but misfortune followed me again and I had to stop, I got sick and had to go back to help at our farm afterwards.

One day, in our parish, the priest announced during the Mass that someone was giving scholarships. I was 23 years old and they said only 16-22 years old were qualified to enroll, I felt disappointed.

My Aunt told me that she would ask the parish priest if there was something he could do? My Aunt gave me the number of the parish priest so I could talk to him personally. I really prayed hard for this. Soon the priest gave me the telephone number of Dualtech's Comrel Officer and the rest is history. I was able to study at Dualtech.

I did not waste time in Dualtech, because I knew that this was the last opportunity I would ever get. It was a big adjustment being away from your family. I could not take it easy. The classes were very demanding and hard. I knew hard work and I practiced it. If our BSTP was hard, ASTP was much harder! In in-plant training work demand was tougher and there was also great temptation to resist. Your spiritual life will be put to the test as well. But you could overcome them if you pray, pray really hard and trust God above all. I may not be perfect but like any one else, I struggled a lot. And this is the important thing that we graduates have to remember: After Dualtech, after the happiness of this day would have subsided. When we will be working out there, earning our living. Starting a family. Being with friends or with our loved ones. We ought to exude that quality which made us whole-the quality of being virtuous men (men with virtue). Good examples to other, whether in life and in work.

Dear fellow graduates, the challenge has always been clear! If we don't measure up, if we don't become better people, what a waste it would be! Sad! Never forget who you are and that we are bound to do great things in life and in work. Because God has thought of us so we are here. Thank you very much to all of you!

STUDY. Learning never ends and even though you graduated from school. Of course, teachers may have taught you and you may have absorbed the knowledge from the textbooks. However, from now on, EXPERIENCE will  be your teacher. You should experience many things so you become the good engineer or the good person who could contribute to the society.  -- Atsushi Kiyokawa, President | NEC Tokin Electronics Philippines, Inc.

Congratulations to all parents. Now you have many graduates here and you are to honor  your graduates. Next, are the teachers here in Dualtech, we appreciate your effort in helping the graduates. Lastly, congratulations to you graduates.

I just have two comments based on what I experienced in my life. First of all, STUDY. Learning never ends and even though you graduated from school. Of course, teachers may have taught you and you may have absorbed  the knowledge from the textbooks. However, from now on, EXPERIENCE will  be your teacher. You should experience many things so you become the good engineer or the good person who could contribute to the society.

However, you must combine the Dualtech experience with your knowledge. In the sixteenth century, there is one political writer (Machiavelli) who wrote so many good advises. He wrote: To know how to go to heaven, one must know the path to hell. It is also applicable for engineer and scientist. You should know “how to fail”. You cannot achieve success if you never experienced failure. It is a very good advice.

Last of all you should love your family. You may have your own family and kids in the future. What you should do is what your parents did for you.

Lastly, going to your future is not so easy. It is a long and winding road. We wish you a bright journey and future.

Bon Voyage!
